Two measurements. The right size.
Long dogs are hard to size from a photo. A tape measure and a bathroom scale are enough. We use the same numbers as the products' own size notes, nothing cleverer than that.

Measure the cushion
Floor to the top of the cushion they land on, with you sitting on it if it sinks a lot.

Weigh them honestly
Hold the dog, step on the scale, subtract yourself. Minis are 8–11 lb; standards 16–32 lb.

When in doubt, go up a step
A gentler slope beats a steeper one for a long back. Stairs that are slightly tall still work; too short and they jump the last bit.
